The olive grows in secondary habitats, on dry slopes, and rocky areas (maquis), from 0 to 900 meters. The species is very widely cultivated, and wild populations are important as potential gene donors for crop improvement, and are also collected for food and medicine. It is native to southeastern and southwestern Europe, and Macaronesia (Madeira, and Canary Islands). (IUCN, Cambridge, 2010)
