There have been successive episodes of crossbreeding between feral and cultivated forms of Olea europaea throughout the Mediterranean region for several centuries. As the cultivated trees were brought from the eastern to the western, crossbreeding also with spontaneous subspecies and then becoming feral, it resulted in the gradual dilution of oriental haplotypes into the western ones.
