The native range of the spiny nopal is not known as it has been cultivated since historical times, and many of the countries where it has been recorded are probably the result of historical introductions and subsequent naturalization. The type collection was supposedly from Cuba, although it is probably an introduction, and it is most likely that the species is originally from Panama. (IUCN, 2011)
