Guanacos are still numerous and widely distributed but continue their decline initiated in the 19th century, in Peru, Bolivia and Paraguay. Over-hunting, range degradation from livestock overgrazing, and interspecific competition for forage have all played significant and long-time roles in the demise of the species all across their distributional range.
