The European goldfinch is caught over most of its range, and is popular as a cagebird. Rates of illegal capturing have been increasing drastically since the 1990s in North Africa. The subsequent decline in population size has led to an increase in its market value, which further increased the level of trapping. It feeds on seeds, buds, flowers and fruits, but also takes arthropods. (Clement, 2016)
