Whilst the most recent, steep declines have been a result of wide-scale poaching, leading to a 98 % collapse in numbers between 1960 and the mid-1990s, heavy killing for land clearance, sport, meat and horn for trading, has been decreasing black rhino population since European settlement. The impact occurred later in East Africa, from the mid to late 1800s. (Richard Hannington Emslie, 2020)
