When the Umayyad commander Musa bin Nusayr seized control of Tangier early in the VIII century, Julian controlled it and also Septem (Ceuta). But although he may held some Byzantine rank, by 711 he seems to have fallen under the control of the Visigoth king Theodoric. Nusayr´s client Tariq bin Ziyad used Tangier as a base for crossing the strait in 711, landing in Gibraltar. (Kaegi, 2010: 256)
