George Washington (Gilbert Stuart, 1795): The Vaughan portrait, named for its first owner, Samuel Vaughan, has been regarded since the 1840s as the painting that Stuart made from life in 1795, but it now appears instead to be an early replica. On 20 April 1795 he compiled a list of gentlemen who been to have copies, which included Philadelphia merchant John Vaughan. (Ellen Miles, 1995: 201)
