Prime minister of Norway (1884-1889): Johan Sverdrup emerged as the leader of the struggle for parliamentary rule. He took the initiative in 1869, with the collaboration of Søren Jaabæk, leader of the agrarian opposition. The decision to hold sessions every year, instead of every third as formerly, strengthened the position of the parliament substantially. ("Stortinget", Ivar Østbø, Oslo, 1994)
