Peter and Paul Fortress: Work began to replace earthen walls by stone walls in 1706. Emperor Peter the great himself laid the foundation of a new masonry bastion on May 30. The reconstruction was completed in the 1740s. Ioannovsky ravelin was used to protect Saint Peter’s gate, the only triumphal one remaining from the time of Peter I.
