Gate of the Sun: Tiwanaku was the capital of an empire that dominated a large area of the southern Andes and beyond, which reached its apogee between 500 and 900. Its large rectangular open temple of Kalasasaya, believed to have been used as an observatory, contains the monumental gate, made from a single slab of andesite cut to form a large doorway with niches on either side.
