The lignum vitae, national flower of Jamaica, is a small tropical tree or large shrub, native to most countries in the Caribbean. The guaiac tree has historically been over exploited for timber and for medicinal properties, over a period of 500 years, and has caused the species to become rare and close to extinction in most countries it is native to. (The IUCN red list of threatened species, 2017)
