The house where Philipp Melanchthon lived is an architectural gem in the Renaissance style with late-Gothic windows and a vaulted, stepped gable. The three-storey building was erected for Elector Johann Friedrich in 1536. Melanchthon, his family and their student lodgers lived there, in Wittenberg (Electorate of Saxony). The aulic council, supreme court of the Empire, was in Vienna from 1497.
