Recruitment in the diaspora (design): Israel’s victory in the 1948 Palestine war was determined to a great extent by the young men and women who were recruited in Europe. They were known by the Hebrew acronym gachal (overseas recruits). The gachal recruits were holocaust survivors (23,000), and Jewish volunteers from North Africa and other countries (3,000).
