The painted comber lives in shallow, rocky bottoms from the shore to 150 m in depth. The species is slow growing and long lived, and it is caught by artisanal fisheries as well as hook and line and trawls, but this is not a major threat globally. The spawning season ranges from January to September with a peak in June. At first maturity, it is 17.3 cm, and it can grow to a size of 36. (IUCN, 2013)
