"Retreat from Marignano" (Ferdinand Hodler, 1900): The defeat at the hands of the French army at Marignano (1515) constituted a major turning point in Swiss history, which left 12,000 dead and marked the end of the Old Confederation’s era as a great European power. Francis I gained Milan, and the Castello Sforzesco within it, the strategic key to control of Lombardy. (Landesmuseum Zürich, 2024)
