In the relief of the shrine of Charlemagne (1215), Saint James appears to the King of the Franks (768-814) in a dream, as in the first chapter of the "Historia Karoli Magni et Rotholandi" or "Historia Turpini", a 12th-century forged chronicle. Jacobus encourages him to fight against the Muslims, and to visit his tomb so many pilgrims follow his example. (Klaus Herbers, 2020: figure 9.3)
