Francesco Sforza was hailed as the ruler of the Duchy of Milan in 1450, constituent state of the Holy Roman Empire. He immediately set to work building additions to the Visconti Castle. The efforts to complete and embellish it were intensified under the rule of his successor Galeazzo Maria, who moved into the castle together with his court in 1468, which will be known as the Sforza Castle.
