A spiny perennial herb, the sea holme grows on coastal sand dunes and occasionally on shingle beaches. It is used for soil stabilization as the extensive root system helps to bind sand on the sea shore. The species has a widespread distribution most coasts in the European region, North Africa, and the Middle East and West Asia. ("The IUCN red list of threatened species", Cambridge, 2014)
