The marsh fritillary occurs in different types of habitat such as moist, sheltered grasslands, along the edges of raised bogs, and on dry, calcareous grasslands. The distribution area of the species includes the Mediterranean region, central Europe, Scandinavia to 62° N, and throughout the temperate zone from Siberia to Korea.
