In the Indian subcontinent, the smooth-coated otter are adapted to live even in the semiarid region of northwestern India and Deccan plateau. It feeds in large rivers and lakes, peat swamp forests, mangroves, estuaries, and also rice fields. There is conflict between otters and humans because of poverty and aquaculture activities, which leading to indiscriminate killing. (P. Foster-Turley, 1992)
