The harpy eagle occurs in lowland tropical forest, typically below 900 m. The species appears to have some tolerance of degraded forest and human-modified landscapes, as long as the forest matrix remains, and there are sufficient large trees for nesting sites and availability of prey. The global population is estimated in 100,000-250,000 birds. (Francisca Helena Aguiar da Silva, 2016)
