The been goose is herbivorous, its diet consisting of herbs, grasses, sedges and mosses, complemented during the breeding season by berries from Empetrum or Vaccinium species. During the winter it feeds on agricultural land taking grain, beans, potatoes and sprouting winter cereal crops. It declined in the past due to hunting, resulting in mortality, injury and disturbance. (Janet Kear, 2005)
