"Portrait of a man" (Diego Velázquez, 1635-1645): The earliest record describes this picture simply as portrait with a golilla, a reference to the sitter’s white collar. The identity of him has caused much debate: A more recent suggestion is José Nieto, who appears in the background of "Las Meninas" (1656), and was a chamberlain in the Spanish royal household.
