The International Judo Federation canceled the world championships scheduled for Barcelona on September 21, after hearing that the Taiwanese team had been unable to get visas. Spain recognized China and had no diplomatic relations with Taiwan. ("New York Times", 8/9/1977: 99). The Japanese delegation took first place in the medal table at the previous world championships (Vienna, 1975).
