The white-backed woodpecker occurs in broad-leaved forest, and uses old-growth and overmature but relatively open deciduous and mixed forest with a high proportion of dead trees and fallen timber. In northern Europe the species is found in forests dominated by birch (Betula spp.) and aspen (Populus tremula). It is highly insectivorous and only occasionally takes plant matter. (IUCN, 2020)
