After Shotoku Taishi (574-622) lost his mother, Empress Anahobe no Hashihito, in 621, he converted her palace residence into a nunnery. Temple tradition tells that the prince had her in mind when he commissioned the elegant camphor-wood statue of the bodhisattva, which shows contemplative expression and gentle, merciful gaze.
