While Theodore Roosevelt was on a bear hunting trip near Onward (Mississippi) on November 14, 1902, having not located a single bear, their assistants cornered and tied a black bear to a willow tree, and suggested him to shoot it. But viewing this as extremely unsportsmanlike, he refused to kill the bear. Soon after, Morris Michtom decided to create a stuffed toy bear, and to call it teddy bear.
