The Spalentor is the most magnificent of the three gates still remaining from the fortifications dating from 1398. The Prince-Bishopric of Basel was an ecclesiastical estate within the Holy Roman Empire, ruled from 1032 by bishops with their seat at the city of Basel. Wenzel von Luxemburg was the king of Germany from 1376 to 1400, when the electors meeting at Lahneck Castle declared him deposed.
