The Japanese serow is endemic to Japan on three of the main islands: Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. The species is common in the mountain ranges of northern and central Honshu, and eastern Shikoku, but it is restricted to small fragmented areas in Kyushu. It went extinct in western Honshu and greatly reduced in other areas before the early 20th century, but since 1960s its range has been expanding.
