England, Wales, Ireland, France and Italy once held the greatest abundance of the white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes). However over the last 10-20 years it has undergone significant declines in these countries and the greatest subpopulation is now found in Ireland, which is still free from the signal crayfish plague. Scotland is the northerly limit of the species range. (IUCN, 2010)
