George VI decided that he wanted his stamps to generally follow the style of his brother Edward VIII, but to be slightly more ornate. Edmund Dulac's design of the king’s head was chosen, and would be used on all George VI definitive stamps. Adorning the portrait were emblems of the four nations: rose, thistle, daffodil and shamrock. ('Designing a royal stamp', The Postal Museum, London, 2023)
