Juan Carlos was born to María de las Mercedes de Bourbon y Orléans, and Juan de Bourbon y Battenberg, counts of Barcelona, in their family home in Rome, where his grandfather Alfonso XIII and other members of the Spanish royal family lived in exile following the proclamation of the republic in 1931.
