George Washington (oil on canvas, 1795): The so-called Vaughan portrait possesses the liveliness characteristic of Stuart's paintings of the 1790s. The face is carefully painted, with thin, dark lines added below the mouth and around the eyes. The twill weave of the canvas is visible through the thinly painted hair.
