The greater rhea prefers open landscapes with a simple structure and low vegetation, such as pampas and open chaco woodland, but is also found in cultivated fields. The female laid eggs on the ground in an area of trampled grass, where the male incubates them alone and raises the young. Food items include insects and grasses.
