The diet of the red-crested pochard consists predominantly of the roots, seeds and vegetative parts of aquatic plants as Chara, Hippurus, Ceratophyllum, Potamogeton, Myriophyllum and especially Nitellopsis obtusa, although it will occasionally also take aquatic invertebrates, amphibians and small fish. The global population size is estimated at 450,000-660,000 individuals (2023). (Johnsgard, 1978)
