Pelagius monachus (synonym): Mediterranean monk seals were once widely and continuously distributed throughout the entire Mediterranean and Black Sea, and the archipelagos of the Canary, Madeira and Azores islands. They are considered extinct in Georgia, Romania, Russia, Ukraine and Bulgaria. The global number of mature animals is likely 444-600. ("The IUCN red list of threatened species", 2023)
