After Germany's surrender, the governments of East Berlin and West Berlin restored the Brandenburg Gate in a joint effort. It was located in the Soviet occupation zone, directly next to the border to the British one. The German Democratic Republic began to function as an independent state in 1949, gaining nearly full sovereignty from the Soviet Union on 20 September 1955, with Berlin as capital.
