Although the common eland is sometimes included in the genus Taurotragus, it is classified in the Tragelaphus one, in accordance with recent genetic evidence. (Jonathan Kingdon, 2013). It is one of the most adaptable ruminants, inhabiting sub-desert, acacia savannah, miombo woodland, and alpine moorlands to 4,900 meters. Its total numbers have been estimated at 136,000.
