With the support of the Danish crown, Flensburg temporarily inherited the Hansa in Denmark, growing into a rich trading town in the 16th century. Its 5,000 inhabitants and 200 ships turned it in the largest trading centre of the Danish crown. The North Gate (Nordertor) was constructed in 1595, in the course of the town’s expansion. The left plaque bears the royal coat of arms of Christian IV.
