The Miramare castle and park were commissioned by Maximilian von Habsburg, who decided to build a residence worthy of his name and rank outside of Trieste, capital of the Austrian Littoral crown land from 1860. The construction began on 1st March 1856 and, on 24th december 1860, the archduke and his wife Charlotte Wettin, princess of Belgium, moved into the ground floor of the building.
