The global population of the boreal owl is estimated to number c. 1,700,000 (2004). It breeds in Eurasian and North American coniferous forests. In Finland, high proportions of spruce forest and agricultural land in the landscape, are associated with greater reproductive success, possibly due to higher small mammal numbers.
