The space laboratory is a cooperative program between the European Space Research Organization (ESRO) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Construction of spacelab was started in 1974 by Entwicklungsring Nord (ERNO), a subsidiary of VFW-Fokker GmbH (Bremen). It is a manned reusable laboratory and remains firmly connected to the orbiter, the space shuttle, during use.
