Philip II founded the monastery of the Escurial in 1563 as a votive monument and pantheon to the Hispanic monarchs from Charles V onwards. The project by Juan Bautista de Toledo, pupil of Michelangelo during the works of the Vatican Basilica, was completed by Juan de Herrera. The monastery, a stone complex of extraordinary dimensions, is surrounded by gardens as the monks' one. (UNESCO, 1984: 318)
