England, Wales, Ireland, France and Italy once held the greatest abundance of the white-clawed crayfish (Austropotamobius pallipes). However over the last 10-20 years it has undergone significant declines in these countries and the greatest subpopulation is now found in Ireland, which is still free from the signal crayfish plague.
