Centenary of the International Telecommunication Union (1865): A permanent central secretariat for the Union was established in 1868: Bureau International des Administrations Télégraphiques. The office was placed under the direction of the Swiss government, and was headed by a director, always of Swiss nationality until 1949. Its headquarters remain in Geneva. (ITU, 2025)
