The pineapple palm is endemic to the Canary Islands but with a much wider non-native distribution due to its use in cultivation. The species is found at elevations from sea level to 1,200 m, and it is naturalised across the world through its use as an ornamental plant. As the official symbol of the Canaries government, it is a protected species. ("The IUCN red list of threatened species", 2017)
