Robert E. Lee (photograph, 1865): The stamp image is inspired by a Brady print obtained at the Library of Congress. As soon as Brady heard that Lee had left Appomattox and returned to Richmond, he headed there with his camera equipment. Through the kindness of Mrs. Lee and a confederate colonel, he received permission to photograph the general on April 16. (The Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY)
