The Shalimar Gardens (Lahore, 1642), constructed by the Emperor Shahjahan I Gurkaniyan, layer Persian influences over medieval Islamic garden traditions, bearing witness to the apogee of Mughal artistic expression. They are characterized by enclosing walls, a rectilinear layout of paths and features, and large expanses of flowing water, covering 16 hectares. ("World heritage list", UNESCO, 1981)
