The Pacific Steam Navigation Company, based in London, initiated a mail service between Callao and Valparaíso in 1840, with two 700 ton vessels, the SS Chile and SS Peru. The post master general of Perú approached the directors of the PSNC, and it was agreed that the remaining stock of the company’s stamps would be donated for use during a three month trial period initiated on December 1st 1857.
